I have always been intrigued by this triangular building in downtown Portland. I always thought it would be so great if someone came in and spruced it up. McMenamins came to the rescue, once again. Thankfully they added breakfast to their menu this time. There was no wait the morning we went, which I believe was on a Saturday. I have only been once so far and they were fairly new so it may be busier these days.

I loved the presentation of their food and it tasted equally as good. They try to use local ingredients whenever possible and they practically have a little salad garden growing in the open kitchen. They bake their own bread and their pastries are from the Crystal bakery. They serve their own McMenamins roasted coffee.

If you enjoy people watching, you will really enjoy it here. There is always something interesting happening outside on the streets of Portland and they have plenty of big open windows to give you the perfect view.

I found another place I know I can go anytime and there won't be a line. But that is no indication of the quality of the food here, they just haven't been discovered by the masses yet. My husband and I ordered the daily hash which on this particular day included braised pork, yumm! This is the first hash I've ordered in a long time and I'm glad I did, the pork literally melted in my mouth. I'm going to be disappointed if I can't order the same thing next time I go.

I loved the ambiance of this place. It is very rustic yet has an eclectic flare. Our server was polite, not overly nice but not rude by any means. Their menu is short and simple and changes occasionally based what they feel like cooking, or that's how I interpreted it. They serve Extracto Coffee, which is a local roaster actually located right next door to them. That's about as local as you get!

The music was a little loud the time we were here, but I'm not sure if that is a regular occurrence or if the staff was just needing some "pick me up" this particular morning. I could have been extra sensitive too, that happens. I tend to prefer a little tranquility while I'm savoring my food. But I digress...

I have not been here for lunch or dinner but their menu looks scrumptious. They also have an extensive local beer menu if that suits you. They enjoy pairing their food with the perfect drink to make your experience complete.

Oh yum! This place is awesome. Hash fit all my criteria for a good breakfast experience. The ambiance upon walking in is very neighborhood cafe, warm and friendly feeling. They focus on getting their food as local and sustainable as possible. Their food is super tasty and they get their coffee from a great local roaster, Courier Coffee (same one featured in my Little Red Bike post). I love when I try new places and they suddenly become my new favorite!

Hash's prices are average to high but if you're trying to be frugal you can get a great breakfast at a great price by just ordering a la carte. The potatoes are so good, I didn't bother with portion control, I couldn't help myself. The Canadian bacon was amazing, I can never eat store bought again, my mouth is watering just thinking about it. I love knowing that they buy their food from local farms. I can eat and enjoy my food without wondering what this animal was fed and how it was treated.

I do have to say, my coffee was a little strong, which if you knew how I drink my coffee (with cream and sugar), "Mary coffee", as my father in law calls it, you might ask how I can even tell? I can tell when I have to keep adding cream. I've had Courier coffee before though and loved it, so I think it was probably just the type of bean and roast that wasn't my favorite. My friend ordered the hot chocolate which was made with hemp, coconut milk and agave syrup, interesting... not really my thing, but I love that they use unique pairings. Also, the jam is definitely homemade, but I'm pretty sure with no sugar, which is good, fruit has it's own natural sugar, but just be warned that it won't be as sweet as the sugar laden stuff you're used to.

We did not have to wait for a table and we arrived at 9am on a Saturday morning, but it was definitely hopping. The staff was very friendly and attentive as well as informative. Hash serves breakfast and lunch all day, 8am to 3pm, Tuesday-Sunday. They are closed Mondays.

It is a bit small, so I wouldn't bring too big of a group here, though they might be able to move some tables together to accommodate.

Ok this is going to be a short post but I had to get this one on here. I had never heard of this place. I'm surprised how many places I just come across on accident, that end up being new favorites. My husband and I walked by City State when we were looking for the restaurant I had just bought a Groupon to, but had never been to. I was hoping this was the restaurant, it wasn't, but I made a mental note that they served breakfast. We came back the next day, which was Sunday.

I loved the little place upon walking in the door. We were seated immediately, I love that. It is definitely a favorite to many others besides myself, as it stayed busy the whole time we were there, but there didn't ever seem to be be people waiting. Although we were seated in the back so maybe I just missed the line. I actually didn't have any coffee here believe it or not. I didn't recognize the name of their coffee vendor, hopefully that meant it was local. My sister had a mocha and loved it, and she is a hard to please mocha drinker. My husband and I split the hazelnut french toast breakfast, four slices of challah bread, two eggs and a choice of meat. Those of you who have read this blog for any amount of time know that is my perfect breakfast, and is very hard to find, another reason they are a new favorite!

They serve breakfast all day, everyday and they open at 8AM. This is a great place for you solo breakfasters that just want to read your paper and not be bothered with conversation that early in the morning. City State is located on a quaint street, just off of burnside with a few cute little shops nearby. If you end up getting something savory for breakfast, save room for a scrumptious fresh donut just down the street at Staccato Gelato. Yum!

Brasserie Montmartre

What a great place! My sister and I were walking by the Brasserie on one of Portland's beautiful sunny Autumn days. I noticed in their window, that they had a brunch menu and decided I had to come check them out. The day we went was an equally lovely day. It is wise to note that they don't serve brunch until 11am Mon-Sat and 10am Sundays.

It is a bit dark inside, to set the mood. So if you're the type that needs a bright cheerful place in the morning, this place would probably send you back to bed. There was hardly anybody here when we came, which I can only guess is because they haven't been open very long. They have just reopened since renovating after the building was condemned a few years ago. They've done a great job renovating. The interior is very French modern/eclectic with a little mysteriousness.

We enjoyed our breakfast with a little live piano music, always nice. Our waiter was very attentive and conversational, I like that. Their menu is not extensive, but it has a little of everything you're used to on a breakfast menu, even a little lox with your bagel if you're so inclined. Their portions are neither huge nor small. I could have easily shared a breakfast with my sister but ate a whole breakfast myself. They serve Illy coffee, which is good coffee, but I always wonder why people don't buy coffee local when there are such great roasters right here in Portland? That's fresh coffee! Oh well, at least it tasted good. There is plenty of seating here for big groups, which is hard to find at most breakfast places, that are worth going to, that is...

When I asked our waiter if he could tell me where they buy most of their food, he was very interested in getting me the information. I thought that was a great sign. He didn't have a ton of information, but he told me what he knew. It showed that they are making an effort. If you end up coming here be sure to ask them the story of the brick wall, it's interesting.

Sub Rosa (A Friendly Neighborhood Joint)

This was another birthday breakfast find. My husband was actually going to take me to Broder Cafe, which used to be Henry's Cafe. Broder's didn't open until 9am and we were there at 8:30am so we just walked around and found this little cafe, kitty corner to Broder. We actually came here once a few years ago when it was a little italian restaurant. I thought it was so sweet. I loved the little old town feel to the neighborhood. I'm so glad that it is a breakfast place now. They are typically a lunch/dinner restaurant serving salads, pizza and pasta and just recently started serving brunch, Sat-Sun from 8:30am-1pm. Their name says it well, it is definitely a friendly neighborhood joint. As we were sitting enjoying our lovely brunch, we watched a hip young couple getting ready to go for a run with their dog. A few ladies walked by the window at different times with their yoga mats, ready for their weekend workout. An older man had his dog tied up outside enjoying the glimpse of sunshine while he read his paper and drank his coffee at a table behind us and a lovely women walked by with her fluffy white dog all decked out in (I'm assuming) her little pink sweater.

I loved that their menus were lovingly used and

had coffee stains all over them. Perfect! I also loved that they listed the sources of their food and founders. How great is that. Shouldn't we all want to know where the food we are about to put in our bodies, is from and who is preparing it. Brilliant. It gave me an idea, along with watching Food Inc. (which every American should watch) to start asking where each restaurant gets their food and let them know that I will be posting their sources or that they would not reveal their sources. Would that interest any of you breakfast lovers out there?

I actually ordered the veggie sausage eggs benedict. I splurged, and I'm so glad I did. I would have never guessed the sausage was vegetarian, it had great flavor. Everything was so delish. My husband had the breakfast burrito which was also full of flavor and filling. The prices start around $9+ for most items, though you can get the basic eggs, potatoes and toast for $7. The coffee is Nossa Familia, which Petite Provence also serves. I'm pretty sure they are a Fair trade, local company. They were not busy at all, probably due to the fact that they just recently started serving brunch. It is a pretty small space, but they might be able to accommodate a somewhat larger group by moving tables together. Charming!

Little Red Bike Cafe (CLOSED...for now) :(

My sister heard about this place from someone who said it was their favorite breakfast place other than The Tin Shed. I figured they must have good taste, so we decided to find it and try it out. I was delighted to find out that it is located just off of Interstate in North PDX, because it is so close to Vancouver. Maybe I can get some of my local Couverites, who think Portland is "so far" to go here.

It is a little more quaint than I was expecting. It is actually more of a coffee shop that happens to serve breakfast. Their main breakfast choices are sandwiches, but they are scrumptious. You can always order items a la carte if you're not into sandwiches, but I highly recommend you give one a try. I always say you can tell when someone starts a business to make money and when they start a business because they love good food. These people love good food. One hint is that they pair things that you would never think of putting together like a fig spread on eggs, and the experience is exquisite. Like in the movie Ratatouille, "you can't just hork it down..."

Ok, last but not least, the coffee. Locally roasted, (check) smooth and velvety experience to the taste buds, (check) crafted with artful brilliance, (check). Loved it. And get this, the owner of the Courier Coffee Roaster, delivers fresh coffee beans in jars to people's door step by bicycle. If you live in the area, you should definitely check him out.

I loved the look of this restaurant when I passed by. It just seemed like the type of place you'd see in a movie where you see the bustling downtown scene and then the camera pans in on two people sitting at a table by the window talking and eating like they're the only two people in the world. I always want to be one of those people so I had to try it out. Luckily my acupuncturist is close by so I took the opportunity to get there very early for my appointment and stop in for some breakfast. We were ushered in, upon arriving and promptly seated. There were no window seats available, unfortunately, but we had a nice quiet table. Maybe it would've ruined the thought of it by realizing no one was filming me and nobody cared that I was sitting there. I suppose the good thing is that it was reality in my life and in the movies they are only acting and maybe they go home wishing that was actually their real lives.

But I digress, quite substantially actually. It was a week day when we went, but the place is very spacious with plenty of tables so I can't imagine there being too long of a wait on weekends.

I ordered my usual, eggs potatoes and toast, so boring I know. I usually get some meat too. I must have been feeling cheap this day and at a place that specializes in salamis and pastramis, I don't know what I was thinking. I enjoyed what I ordered and felt their portions were what a normal person should eat. Their prices start around $8 and up.

This is a Jewish deli so they have some fun choices that you aren't going to see on the average breakfast menu like pastrami and eggs, lox and latkes. They also make their own bagels and bialys. The coffee was great, I think it was Stumptown but I can't remember (slacker). I think they could definitely handle larger groups here but it is also a great place for a date. Their lunches and dinners look scrumptious. If you're an unabashed carnivore like me, this place will make your mouth water.

I forgot to take a picture of the food here, but it was very similar to my pictures from "Gower St. Bistro" since they are essentially the same owners. I loved this little cafe. Very light and open with windows on all sides. They serve Stumptown coffee I believe. You'd think I'd remember that, but alas I take too long to post these and forget everything, but I'm not supposed to tell you that. The prices are a little on the higher side which is fitting for the setting.

There are mostly bistro tables here seating 4-5 people. They do have tables against the back wall that could probably be pushed together for a large group but I would call ahead. We went here during the week and there were not very many people, so I don't know what the crowds are like on the weekends.

This would be a great place to take a date, very classy. It is also located right in downtown near shopping, hotels etc.

Update: I have been informed that Everett St. serves Sleepy Monk Coffee out of Cannon Beach, thanks Lacey.

John Street Cafe

Stumptown coffee is served here, ok, so go. No really, this is the quintessential corner cafe. Nondescript, cozy, and most importantly great food and great coffee. I had heard about this little cafe from a few different people. I finally got a chance to go check it out. I had never been into this part of Portland, didn't realize it existed, but it's worth going out there just for the breakfast, and maybe a little stroll down the streets that make you feel like you've gone back in time to a little neighborhood town.

John Street Cafe is not a very big restaurant so a party of four is probably the biggest party I would bring here. I'm sure they would do there best to accommodate more but you'll probably take up half the restaurant. The coffee refills were a little lacking but it was pretty busy the morning we went. We were greeted promptly when we came in and offered some coffee while we waited for a table. My husband and I split an omelet as we usually do and we both left satisfied. The pancakes looked like they could have fed all four of us. The atmosphere was a little noisy but that's to be expected in such a small room filled with people. There were plenty of people waiting when we left so I would get here early.

Mustard Seed Cafe (Redmond, OR) (CLOSED)

I found this cafe when my family was on vacation at the nearby Eagle Crest Resort. My mom had asked the repair man if he knew of any good breakfast places around (knowing that I would be on the lookout). He said that he really liked the Black Bear... something but that the "women" tend to like the Mustard Seed Cafe. He said it was a little fru fru for his taste.

We took our chances and there is nothing fru fru about it. Unless by that he meant that it is clean and well decorated and serves local fresh food, then yes, it was fru fru. I was very impressed with this restaurant. The owner was our server and he had an obvious passion about wanting to serve local and fresh food whenever possible. The coffee was from a local roaster in the area, it past my taste test. The food was very tasty and reasonably priced, though a little on the higher side. My dad was impressed with the generous portion of ham with his ham and eggs and I appreciated a menu item that included avocados. I came upon this unique coffee house by the suggestion of someone from the area. I was informed that this is one of Bill Gates' favorite places to visit. I have no way of validating that but there is a newspaper article cut out and framed proudly at the counter with a picture of Bill sitting at one of their tables.

You will drive by it if you don't know it is there, as it is located a little off the beaten path. I admit it is more of a lunch place than breakfast though if you are happy with a pastry and coffee in the morning, it'll be perfect. This blog is about good coffee mostly so I have to give a shout out to a coffee shop here and there. They serve crepes, paninis, soup, salad and a few different antipasta plates. They also are not only a coffee bar but have a beer and wine menu as well. This is the perfect place for a fun little date for breakfast, lunch or a light dinner. If you are date-less, grab your laptop and go sip some espresso or your favorite wine and enjoy a few hours by yourself with their free wi-fi. Have fun!

Easy Street Cafe

This great little corner cafe is literally inside a music store. When we were seated and I started looking at their menu, I thought "yes, these people get it." I first looked for their coffee vendor and like a good Seattle cafe, their coffee was from a local roaster and NOT Starbucks, thank you very much! I actually wrote it down but of course that piece of paper is long gone. What matters is that it was good and only $1. Seriously.

So what makes a breakfast place "get it?" Well for one, they had an extensive menu with choices for veg heads as well as meat lovers and not just your token, "we'll throw these in so we don't get complaints about not having options," but they have a great selection of everything. Also, they have a section for lighter appetites so if you're not the trucker appetite type, you don't have to feel bad about wasting food or paying for it, for that matter.

They had my favorite combo of french toast with eggs and a side of meat (the Lil' Kim) for a reasonable price. I can't tell you how hard it is to find that combo on a menu. They had my vote right away. My husband had the Beck omelet. He loved the veggie bacon. He was pleased except that there was a little too much sour cream.

All the staff look like rock stars, fitting. Our server was very sweet and attentive. If I lived in the neighborhood I would be there every weekend. It's just that kind of place.

Gower St. Bistro

My husband and I spent our 5 year anniversary at this Bed and Breakfast at Cannon Beach. The restaurant is separate from the hotel so anyone can eat there. It is walking distance from the beach. Such a cute place. Very small, just perfect for a morning breakfast with your special someone before you go for a stroll on the beach.

The food was delicious. The server was very nice and social. It's one of those cafe's where you feel like you're in a romantic movie just eating there. Does anyone ever feel that way or is it just me...

The prices are moderate to high but it's worth it. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. The dinner smelled yummy and all the people looked so content and sophisticated with their wine glasses and big plates of pasta, as we walked to an overly priced seafood restaurant and sat next to a large party with overindulged, loud children and wished we had just eaten at our cute little B&B. We will definitely try it next time.

I would also recommend the hotel. They are very friendly and the rooms are small but romantic. It's almost like going back in time but with a modern flare. Very fun little place.

Clinton Corner Cafe

This was my pick for Valentine's Day morning. I had never heard of it or even seen it, which was perfect! I actually found them on mrbreakfast.com, which, I must say, does not give very much information and certainly doesn't give any pictures :)

It is a very cute, eclectic little cafe. I loved their red door and french music. Our

waitresses were very nice and attentive. Well ok, we were the first and only customers for a little bit. We were a little confused about their having the front door propped wide open when it was snowing outside, but they agreed nicely to shut it for us.

Their menu is pretty limited but has options for carni's and veggies. We split the smoked salmon scramble. The scramble wasn't anything to write home about, but it wasn't bad. They serve Stumptown coffee, so they've got that on their side. Prices were moderate. Seating is definitely limited to small parties. They have their own baker and had some scrumptious looking desserts.

It is a cute little corner cafe in the neighborhood. There are some fun shops and cafe's nearby to check out.

Cadillac Cafe

I have been putting off visiting Cadillac Cafe for some time now. Inevitably when I tell people that I have a breakfast blog, I get asked the question, "have you tried Cadillac Cafe?" I think, just the fact that so many people know about the place, makes it less appealing. I did finally end up going and it wasn't so bad. It does sort of strike me as a bit "chain-ish" though.

I only went because my friend Stephanie started working there. I told her I was going to put her on my blog, so if you go, sit at the bar and tell Stephanie hi for me.

The food was very good. The coffee is Kobos. It is one my husbands favorite breakfast places now. It's in his top five places. We had the french toast with hazelnuts.

It is a very busy restaurant, another reason I've avoided it, so if you're not big on waiting, I'd try to hit it early. They do have a bar section that is easier to get a seat in. Honestly, I wouldn't even try to get a big party in here, unless you get reservations and I don't know if they take them. Prices are moderate to high. Cadillac Cafe is a fancier type, so you might feel a little out of place in your sweats, if you care.

Petite Provence Boulangerie & Patisserie

I think I have eaten here about seven times in the last two months. This is definitely in my top five places to go for breakfast now. For one, their lattes are beautiful (if the right person makes it) and they have great coffee. First criterium met. Second they have a great menu, fresh new breakfast items for the meat lover and vegetarian alike, not to mention an amazing array of bakery yummies. And third, I love the atmosphere here. I just feel like I'm going to step out onto the streets of Paris when I leave (which leaves me a little disappointed when I actually do leave, but it's getting better down there).

This is a great place for a romantic breakfast with your special someone or with some friends or family or just to go yourself and watch the cute little bundled up munchkins walk in with their hip urban parents as they make a b-line for the kids cookie window.

They can accomodate fairly large groups by putting tables together, though it can get a bit crowded. We have never had to wait yet for a table, which I'm sure is soon to change, but we'll enjoy it for now. The staff here are very friendly and the service is prompt. You have to try one of their espresso drinks if you go, just for the beauty of it.

Francis Restaurant

My husband and I found this quiet corner breakfast nook quite on accident. We were heading to our default breakfast fave, Helsers, and decided to drive down the road a bit because he thought he had remembered seeing a sign that said serving breakfast. Sure enough, a new place to try out! Of course I was delighted, I love to find new places to add to my blog for all of you fellow breakfast lovers. Unfortunately the excitement is usually distracted by the time I get home and it ends up at the bottom of my "computer to do" list.

Francis' is a great place to go if you are looking for a little more class in your breakfast experience. Sometimes you roll out of bed and you just want to go someplace where you could practically wear your pajamas and nobody would really notice (i.e.Tin Shed, Gravy etc.) But sometimes, like on a date or to celebrate a birthday or what have you, you want to dress up and this is where you should go.

Our server at Francis' was very cheery and pleasant. Their menu boasts of unique ingredients you wouldn't expect on your breakfast plate, such as sautéed grape leaves with garlic and kalamata olives, garnishing a goat cheese omelet with pear tomatoes. They do not serve potatoes with their breakfasts as is the usual fare but a side of fruit instead. They do offer potato dishes on the menu and I'm sure you could probably substitute instead of fruit if you wanted. I prefer potatoes, but it was a fresh change.

There is something here for everyone whether you just like your eggs and toast or you like to try new creations and unique food pairings or whether you are a more vegetarian/vegan breakfaster. Most importantly they serve Stumptown coffee, though our waitress said they are thinking of switching to another vendor, who isn't even local! Why in the world, when we have some of the best coffee right here in our back yard? So if you eat here, urge them to stay local!

I just found this great little, well not so little, coffee shop in the Pearl district. If you have kids this is the place for you. If you don't have kids, like me, this is a great place to meet your friends that do. I have the hardest time figuring out where to get together with my friends who have small children so that we can catch up and the kids have something to do; problem solved. Sip & Kranz not only has a separate play area for the kids inside, but there is also a fountain (chlorinated) just outside their doors if you want to enjoy the sunshine while sipping your coffee, or your beer or wine in the evenings, while the kiddos play in the water.

They also offer a limited menu of breakfast items. One of which was recommended to me, their famous oatmeal made with steamed milk.

They actually made me some for free, just so

I could take a picture of it and I was full. I

was so bummed that

I didn't come with an appetite. The gal who made it was more than happy to be "forced" to eat it herself. I'll definitely be going back to try it. I'll have to pay this time but hey I don't mind

supporting a great business.

I don't know why but "and catering" has actually kept me away from trying this place. It's like putting "and tavern" on the end of a dinner restaurant. Not that it's a similar meaning it just gives me the same reaction and I couldn't explain to you why that is...

I loved this little cafe! It is very quaint. I went here on a weekday and there was plenty of room but I can't tell you what it's like on the weekends. Their french toast is scrumptious. They had my favorite combination that I rarely find on the menu: french toast, sausage and eggs for $8.95. Now is that so hard, really now? But you tell me if you ever see that combo on any menu. They make their own sausage, pork or veggie. I had the pork, mmm, mmm! Sorry veg heads, I'm sure the veggie is tasty. Veggie and sausage just never sounded right together to me. My friend had the eggs benedict that was recommended by our server Lee (I think that is his bike out front). It looks unbelievably good. I can never afford the eggs benedict. When I am old, I will wear purple and eat eggs benedict!

They serve K&F coffee here. It is a local roaster. I had about 4 cups, whooa that seems like so much when you actually write it down. Needless to say it was good coffee. I don't hear much about K&F Roasters? The prices were actually pretty reasonable they have something for everyone.

I have to admit, I waited too long to post this and I can't even remember what I ordered or what kind of coffee they serve. I know I'm becoming known as the sleeping blogger. I'll work on it!

I can remember that I wasn't incredibly impressed with this place. The breakfastguy I think really likes this place, he'll have to post his reasons for you...hint, hint.

The prices here are on the average to high side. The seating is somewhat scrunched and it's a bit noisy, whine, whine. Maybe I was in a bad mood this day. Our server was nice, so nice that she served us before the people sitting next to us who had been there long before we arrived, oops. The food is homemade, they have yummy pastries and interesting varieties of breakfast choices. It is definitely a fun little eclectic cafe, so go try it out and give the breakfastguy a high five!

I haven't been to J&M for quite some time and to be honest this wasn't our initial destination. We were actually heading to Bridges Cafe but if you are familiar with Bridges you are aware that we were obviously too far south. I saw the sign for J&M and decided I might as well add them to my blog so here it is.

J&M is a quaint little cafe on the corner of SE Ash St. and 6th Ave. We showed up this morning around 9:45AM and there was hardly a wait, which is unheard of on a Saturday morning but I have an idea the winter like weather in April, might have had something to do with it. We helped ourselves to an eclectic array of mugs hanging from steel sculptured roots attached to a post in the middle of the restaurant. The coffee is Stumptown, I honestly think they are taking over the Portland area, which is fine with me.

The prices here are actually quite reasonable, more so than I remember them being. I had the scrambled eggs with the homemade turkey sausage patty. Yummm... My husband enjoyed his burrito, which is great if you have a big morning appetite.

This is a great place to go if you're a solo breakfaster. There is a bar if you want to solo it with others, or there are quite a few small tables where you could enjoy your breakfast and maybe sneak in a few minutes in you favorite book or paper, that is if not too many people are waiting to be seated.

We will definitely be coming here again soon. Maybe I'll actually brave it and be a solo breakfaster one of these days. I always think about it and some things are much more romantic in thought than in actuality. But I guess I'll never know unless I try...

Utopia

I have been here before but last time was on the weekend and it was quite a bit busier. This time I came with my parents during the week. It was nice because it was much more laid back and we were able to get to know our server a little better because she wasn't so busy trying to make a crowd of people happy.

Mississippi Station (No longer serving breakfast)

Why wait in the rain?
Have you stood in line waiting to get into Gravy on Mississippi? Well if so, chances are you were waiting outside, freezing and getting wet. Well next time just take a little walk down the street to Mississippi Station. Now if it's Mon-Fri it's true they don't open until 10AM but on the weekends, which is usually when the wait is, they open at 8AM and there has never been a wait when I've been there. Personally I think their food is better than Gravy. I admit, they don't serve Stumptown. They used to serve Blue Gardenia (which was very good) but they switched to Tully's. It's pretty good, I'm not a big fan of Tully's, but enough about the coffee.

I had my regular scramble with sausage which was yummy (though the eggs were a little undercooked). The berry pancakes looked wonderful. The prices are a little higher than Gravy, but when you don't have to wait
and you're not sitting on the
person next to you, it's worth it.

They have patio seating as well, which would be great on a summer morning. They also have dinner with live music on certain evenings. Snag a friend and go check it out.

Ok, this is another favorite. This is where my husband and I went for breakfast the morning he took me to the Rose Gardens and asked me to marry him, ahhhh. I started my breakfast hobby when we were dating. That is what we did, we went on breakfast dates. I prefer morning dates to evening ones. You're not as likely to say or do something you'll regret.
On that note, let's start with the coffee. If you order the French press they serve Stumptown, if you just order the house coffee they serve Portland Roasters. Interesting I know. My take, Stumptown is a little more expensive so if you're willing to pay a little more for the French press, they're willing to give you the good stuff. If you just want to pay for a cup of coffee that they'll refill over and over...and over (in my case). They'll give you the good, not so expensive stuff. Thankfully I was with friends who bought the French press for me, knowing that I am a Stumptown snob. They know I'm cheap and I would've settled. Thanks Lattin's.

The food here is great. A little on the pricier side but worth it for the ambiance ($7-11). The frittata's are a little on the dry side, but still tasty. I love the scramble with prosciutto, sun dried tomatoes and feta.

Indulge yourself and enjoy a latte with the Stumptown signature swirl. Mmmm!

The oatmeal was enough to feed four people, and whatever you do, taste it before you add any brown sugar, it's already sweet.

You'll definitely want to show up early. They open at 9AM and the tables are usually filled the minute they open the doors. They do take reservations for parties of 6 or more I think, if you're early enough to snag one. This is a great place for bigger parties. Enjoy!

Beaterville Cafe is very eclectic. It's like walking back into the 50's. If you enjoy vintage cars you'll feel at home here. Beaterville serves Portland Roasters coffee, if you have to wait grab a mug of your choice and serve yourself then go next door and check out the glorified garage sale.
Food here is good. Very reasonably priced. They aren't overly nice here, it's more of a "you eat here because we let you" type place, but I've had mostly pleasant service.

Fullers is like one long bar. The only seating is pretty much at the bar. It's a welcomed difference to the usual cafe feel. This gives you the small town, read your paper and talk to the bartender/waitress experience. The food here is not my normal desire (local, fresh, organic). It's your regular breakfast food; better than Denny's though. Prices are low. I don't remember the coffee being note worthy, but not bad either. It's a great place to take your dad who doesn't like all that fufy stuff and just wants to read the paper with his eggs, bacon and coffee. Does that explain it...

Ever had homemade ketchup? It's interesting, you should try it. If you eat ketchup with your breakfast you'll have to try it because they aren't giving the Heinz's a penny here. Bread & Ink has their own ketchup, how's that for "from scratch."
I have no idea where B&I get's their coffee, funny that I've never asked as I've eaten here several times. I don't know how that has escaped me. It must be ok though, since I've gone back more than once.
This is a very classy cafe. It's a great place for a special breakfast date. The prices are on the high side but not unreasonable (i.e. Cadillac Cafe). The food is good from what I can remember (it's been a while). I do remember they have great omeletts.

Helser's is another one of my favorites. They serve Kobo's coffee (I know), it's very good though. They also offer the option of having your coffee with a French press, which you should try if you never have, mmmmm.
The food is excellent. I normally get my usual, eggs, chicken apple sausage and potatoes (now you know my staple). I have tried their french toast, it's wonderful as well as their potato pancakes and eggs benedict, yum!
This is a great little place to meet your friends or bring your kids, they have cute little cups for the munchkins. You will be waiting outside if you come after 9, so come prepared, but generally there isn't that long of a wait even if you sleep in a little. Prices are average to high. Mmmmm, this is one of my favorites. This is a new find, thanks to my Stumptown buddy Stephen. And yes of course they serve Stumptown (so does that little coffee shop down the street).
Screen Door prides themselves on their country home cooking. Normally when breakfast places claim they have home cookin, it's a whole lot of butter and grease, not so here. They use fresh and I think a lot of local ingredients (I could be getting my restaurants mixed up sorry) but it's good and fresh and that's what really matters. A lot of the locals in the neighborhood come here so remember the rule "before 9 no line, after 9 takes time." They open at 9AM so don't get there too early.
They have a great "specials" menu with food combinations you wouldn't normally think of but everything I have had here is excellent. I especially like the mushroom scramble and the biscuits and gravy look scrumptious! This is a great place to bring groups as the space allows for larger parties than most breakfast places. Mother's on 2nd and Stark is also a good place for groups.

I believe Muddy's serves Portland Roasters coffee. Yumm. Though I am partial to Stumptown if you havn't figured that out. I have never had to wait for a seat here, though I came when it was still quite new.
Muddy's feels like you're going over to a friends house and eating at their kitchen table, it's small but homey. If you want to just come and sip on some jo' I believe they have free WIFI (don't hold me to that...)
The food here is good, regular fare with a few twists (green eggs and ham). There is a little bit of a wait on the food as they only have one cook, but hey you don't have to wait for your seat, take your pick. The prices are low to average.
They do have a community table so if you're lonely and want to make a breakfast buddy, sit at the big table in the middle.

Gravy is very quaint and lively. We came here on a rainy day and luckily were able to fit inside to wait for a seat; but plan on waiting outside if you come after 9AM. They don't make you wait for your coffee though, so go on inside and fill up if you can get past the people to the coffee. We had a live accordionist to add to our eating enjoyment. I don't know if the live music is a regular part of the service here as I've only been once. The food is very good, just your regular breakfast nook menu. Prices are average to high. They seem to squish everyone in so if you like your space you might want to go down the street to The Mississippi Station (Blue Garndenia coffee), they have great pancakes or across the way to Equinox (Stumptown coffee). Once again Stumptown Coffee is what brought me to Equinox, so I needn't comment any more on the coffee. I do love the tall white mugs with the black straw; very classy...
The food here is very good, and very nicely presented, if you don't mind your food all touching. The prices are on the medium to high side but the ambiance makes it worth it. Unless you're sitting by someone with a particularly loud voice and less than desireable vocabulary which happened to be the case for me, but my second visit was much more enjoyable. Equinox also serves lunch and dinner with outside seating as well. Equinox is right off Mississippi Ave. in NE Portland which is a great area to walk around and visit the very diverse shops. Milo's is one of my favorites! Obviously my fave is the feta, spinach and tomato scramble, but the salmon scramble is just as awesome!
As with most small breakfast places, you better get here before 9am or you'll be sittin' at the bench reading your paper for a bit. But they don't make you wait for your coffee, go ahead and grab a mug and fill er' up then head back outside and enjoy your joe till they call you.
Milo's has fresh food, an exceptional selection, and the prices beat most of the places I've been to. And they have great coffee! Fresh homemade jam at the table too.

UPDATE Feb. 20, 2010: Henry's is now closed and has been reopened as Broder, a Swedish restaurant. They have great breakfast I'll try to do a post soon.

Thanks to the recomendation of a fellow blogger and I'm assuming, breakfast lover, I found Henry's Cafe.
It felt a little like we were seated in a glorified hallway, but all in all the atmosphere was welcoming. The staff here are friendly and helpful.
I have to say I wasn't too impressed with the food, but I did only try one item, an omelet. It was a little too buttery, is that a word, buttery? They did have a great selection though, made with organic, locally grown produce, that is a plus for me. I will have to try something else next time.
I would definitely go back just because of the area it is located. It makes you long to go back to that small town you never knew.

Stepping Stone prides itself on their rude service. I havn't experienced them being exceptionally rude but they are particularly proud of a letter complaining about their service. It is framed on the wall.
The food here is pretty good. Nothing really to rave about, but it's certainly not trucker food.
If you like quaint little neighborhood hangouts, where everyone is sitting at the bar, and the waiters know the locals, this is the place to go. It's been a while since I've been here, I can't remember the coffee. I'm sure it's good though, it's Portland!

If you don't mind sitting outside that is. They built a massive patio cover recently and there is a nice big fireplace to keep you warm. Though I can't say I've seen a fire in it...? I love this place. I always order the "Fetch" which is scrambled eggs over potato cakes with tomatoes, green onions, smoked apple bacon and cheddar cheese mmm mmm!! Their coffee is organic from the Portland Roasters, it's good. There's usually a wait, but walk inside, grab the mug of your choice, and fill er' up baby! Back to Seattle again. I can't resist. Ok, I admit I was drawn to this place because of the neon sign. It wasn't too bad. The food was good, they just didn't really have much of a selection. I'm kind of picky though. The prices were a wee bit on the high side, but it is Queen Anne's Hill after all. The music is loud, which is fun, if you're a morning person. The coffee was good and locally roasted, a definite plus!!

The corner cafe. This quaint little find is right on the corner of a little neighborhood. Good food, I like the creative selection. The coffee was good, I can't remember who the roaster was... very important! Fun atmosphere and very "decorated" staff. Seems to be a favorite, as there were plenty waiting. Bring your dog and sit outside!

Ok, so it's not breakfast but you need to check this place out. I went here for my birthday and it was such a blast. Let me just say, they're known for their macaroni, and they have great macaroni. I had the pesto and chicken, which was excellent but I tried their smoked cheddar and ham macaroni, yum "o" I'll be getting that next time. Their food is very reasonably priced. The fun part is they have really long tables and they just seat everyone together. So you may end up sitting with people you don't know. It's a great place to go with a group!

Alameda Cafe is located on Freemont. This is a good little breakfast nook. Literally a nook, it's pretty quaint inside. I think I remember the coffee here being pretty good. We sat outside in the sunlight next to the colorful flower boxes. My mom ordered the crunchy french toast, (I stole a bite) that's not actually what it's called I just can't remember. I'm sure they'd know what you were talking about if you tried to order it. It's yummy. Their food is well made just a wee bit on the pricey side, for my taste anyway.
